Team Anna supporters kept vigil throughout the night at the Jantar Mantar hunger strike venue, fearing forcible hospitalisation of three fasting activists, Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai.
Even the routine change of duty of police personnel was initially perceived by protesters as a sign of mobilisation to forcibly take Kejriwal and two others two hospital. A volunteer immediately alerted others and as supporters started gathering, a senior police official informed them that it was change of duty of personnel and they were there not to take anybody to hospital.
The Delhi Police on Wednesday wrote to Team Anna’s Neeraj Kumar, advising that fellow activists Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai – fasting for the past eight days and who doctors say needed immediate medical attention – be admitted to a hospital as soon as possible.
“You are advised to follow the doctors’ recommendation and take steps for immediate hospitalisation of Arvind Kejriwal, Gopal Rai and Manish Sisodia to prevent harm to their lives, failing which you would be squarely responsible for any untoward incident,” additional commissioner of police (New Delhi) K.C. Dwivedi said in the letter.
But Anna Hazare and Kejriwal dismissed the suggestion as an attempt to derail the protest. Rejecting the doctors’ diagnosis that his and Rai’s rising ketone levels demanded immediate hospitalisation, the former bureaucrat exhorted his supporters to get them out of hospital if the police forcibly got them admitted.
“The government is saying they will put me in a hospital as I am trying to commit suicide. If the government forcefully shifts us to hospital, then it is your duty to bring us back,” he said at on Wednesday.
Veteran activist Hazare echoed the view, saying he would refuse to negotiate with the government if any attempt was made to move the fasting activists from the venue. The tough stand came after Team Anna members held a discussion to chart the future course of action in the view of the failing health of Kejriwal, Rai and Sisodia......
