Supporting UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee for Presidential candidature does not mean Shiv Sena is supporting Congress, said Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena’s executive president.
“We have extended our support to Pranab Mukherjee as a Presidential candidate but this does not mean we support Congress,” said Uddhav. He was addressing the shivsainiks at the 46th Foundation Day of Shiv Sena at suburban Matunga.
“Our support is not to the Congress. You must have read the statement of Balasaheb (Thackeray) where he said that the President is the country’s highest constitutional post,” said Thackeray.
Asking NDA to exploit the “anti-Congress wave” in the country, Uddhav said the need of the hour is to stay together and present a “right alternative” to the people.
Sena chief Bal Thackeray said he had decided to lend support to Mukherjee as the country’s prestige was at stake because of the political machinations of a few.
Thackeray said, “When you don’t have a sword with you, you don’t clench your fist and talk about courage and valour,” clearly alluding to the fact that the BJP neither had the numbers to pull off a victory in the presidential elections nor a candidate.
Bal Thackeray, in a statement in Saamna, cited consensus as the reason for his party’s support to Mukherjee.
“Let us show to the world that we are one,’” he said, and took potshots at the various political parties for lowering the prestige of the office of India’s President....
